Back to Muzakblocker

The hate list used for Muzakblocker.

Sure enough, there are hundreds, thousands of songs that can be added to this list of irritating disturbers of concentration, and every person's list, at every particular time, is of course different. The recipe can probably be applied to any individual list, if you only make enough overdubs to mask every recognizable trait – although I suspect the end result would be basically quite similar.

The songs are in their order of length. In the end, it became the first song, in this group the longest one, that decided the length of the entire piece. Nothing stops you, of course, from listening to the piece as a loop, many times in a row, so that it lasts as long as you need to block out the muzak.

The swedish and polish ear torturers on my list weren't as easy to download as the big international hits: Thomas Di Leva, Rock-Olga and Jan Malmsjö, and the maker of the extremely irritating “Kocham cię” managed to stay out this time. I got 61 songs in the end. It was important that they would mask each others' recognizable traits as much as possible, so the dynamics had to be evened out as much as possible. The dynamics of every song was thus normalized and they went through individual compression. Even so, I was astonished to find that certain elements sounded through almost until the end through the more and more complex sound body. It was the fucking organ of the Doors, Whitney Houston's and Millie Jackson's damned howling, Army of Lovers' fleshy choirs, Celine Dion's ridiculous flute, George Michael's kitchy saxophone and Louis Armstrong's famous trumpet sound (that I like, by the way, it's the song I can't stand) and to some degree the brain dead rhythm structures from Macarena, The Knife and Born In The Usa. I first made 10 layers, then the same 10 backwards, then 20, 20 extra backwards, 30 back and forth, 40 and finally 43 tracks – plus those 43 backwards as well. Because of the unmatching song lengths, there are holes in the tracks, which I distroibuted along the middle of the piece, but it's still at least 32 tracks going at the same time in each direction, and I think I finally succeeded with my mission (in spite of that Whitney Houstons “aaaaaiiiiaaaaa” sometimes still haunts me, but I'm not sure it's my imagination). Time to load the mp3 player and go to places where Mix Megapool or Lugna Favoriter (some of the most annoying swedish radio channels) rule, as a free human being!
